We 'cannot understand how anyone can be confident that today's opinion will be the last of its kind,' the liberal justices wrote. These precedents safeguarded an array of personal freedoms including contraception in a 1965 decision, interracial marriage in 1967, same-sex intimacy in 2003 and gay marriage in 2015. Constitution's 14th Amendment, which prevents states from infringing liberties without 'due process of law.' They also spelled out the threat posed by the ruling to other rights that the court has recognized in decisions over the decades under a legal principle called 'substantive due process' arising from the U.S.
